Empty Bowls 2023

Presale tickets have ended, but tickets will be available for purchase at the door on the day of the event for $25, we can accept cash, card and check. We hope to see you there and thank you for supporting The Gleaning Project of South Central PA.

Each year, our community comes together to share a meal--a meal made possible by local artists, restaurants, bakeries, musicians, and other small businesses--all with the aim of raising both awareness and funds to combat food insecurity within our community. For the ticket price of $25 at the door, our guests will enjoy live music, a meal of soup, bread, beverage and dessert, served in a handcrafted bowl, which they can then take home as a reminder of those whose bowls remain empty.

We hope you will join us in supporting Empty Bowls, and in doing so, likewise supporting the mission of The Gleaning Project! To do so, you can:

What is Empty Bowls?

The Gleaning Project's 5th annual Empty Bowls Community Dinner and Fundraiser is part of an international grassroots movement that aims to:

  • RAISE AWARENESS about hunger related issues
  • RAISE MONEY for a hunger related organization
  • ADVOCATE for community involvement

Artists donate handmade ceramic bowls and restaurants donate homemade soup and bread for a community meal. In exchange for a suggested donation of $20, guests choose a bowl to eat out of and to take home as a reminder of those whose bowls remain empty.

What can I expect on Friday April 13th?

A family friendly community dinner:
Empty Bowls 2018 reflects The Gleaning Project's philosophy of connecting our community, reducing waste, and feeding families. Just like the old story of Stone Soup, we believe that when everyone contributes a little something, we can achieve the impossible. Local restaurants provide food, artists provide ceramic bowls, volunteers provide everything from crock pots to tablecloths, and you provide good conversation and a great time!

A beautiful handmade ceramic bowl:
Dozens of local artists have been hard at work creating gorgeous bowls for you to choose from! Select your favorite bowl, and take it home with you at the end of the evening to remember those whose bowls remain empty in our community.

A delicious soup and bread dinner:
More than 20 local restaurants and bakeries are donating a variety of delicious breads and soups for you to try. In line with The Gleaning Project's philosophy, we encourage you to taste as much as you'd like, but to be mindful of others. When the soup runs out, the soup runs out!

Homemade Dessert:
This is our 5th annual event. Let's celebrate with some homemade desserts!

Live music:
Tom Jolin plays traditional American music, mixing vocals with the hammered dulcimer, banjo, button accordion, harmonica and more. Get ready to tap your toes and play in Tom's jug band!

All this for a suggested donation of $20!
All proceeds benefit The Gleaning Project's efforts to reduce food loss on farms and provide free, fresh, local produce to folks experiencing food insecurity. If you're in need of a free meal, we encourage you to join us. If you're able to make a larger donation, we greatly appreciate it! If you already have 4 beautiful ceramic bowls from past years, enjoy soup in a disposable bowl for a suggested $10.
Donations are cash or check only. There is an ATM in the CUB building of Gettysburg College.

How can I get involved behind the scenes?

We need TONS of volunteers to help make this event a success!

  • Hang event posters in your neighborhood
  • Lend us a crock pot
  • Pick up and deliver soup or bowls from local restaurants and artists
  • Bake a dessert
  • Set up and decorate the event space
  • Serve soup, bread, or beverages during the event
  • Clean up after the event
